BA Lady Cougars 3-3 after first week of play

The Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars kicked off their fast-pitch softball season with a 3-3 week including a season opening 10-0 win over Wayne Academy July 31.
Last weekend the team and coach Becky Flowers traveled to Magee where they played in the Simpson Academy Tournament. This weekend they’ll be at the Hansel King Sports Complex playing in a tournament hosted by Copiah Academy.
BA opened their day at the SA tournament with a 4-1 loss to Simpson before bouncing back for an 18-0 win over Presbyterian Christian School.
In their finale Copiah Academy took a 5-3 win over the Lady Cougars. The two teams met again on Monday with Copiah taking a 6-2 win on their home field.
Senior Madi Smith pitched the win over Wayne Academy and only gave up one hit in five innings while striking out nine.
Junior Abby Grace Richardson homered and doubled against Wayne t to lead BA at the plate. Richardson kept the hot bat all weekend as she also hit bombs against Simpson and Copiah in tournament action.
Eighth grader Kensy Covington got the pitching win over PCS in two innings. Senior Matti B. Johnson drove in two runs in the win.
Richardson finished with seven hits on the weekend while fellow junior Madison Moak had five total hits in four games including a double and a triple.
Thursday on the road, junior pitcher Emily Claire Felder struck out five and gave up two hits in a 9-0 win over Centreville Academy.
Felder also helped her cause at the plate with a double, a home run and five runs driven in. Richardson drove in a pair of runs as well and blasted another home run while Smith chipped in a triple.
Tournament play Saturday begins with BA playing Jackson Prep at 9 a.m. The Lady Cougars will then play Bowling Green School at noon and Amite School Center at 1:30 p.m.
