Friday morning, more than two dozen runners and walkers — plus escorts and support personnel from Brookhaven Fire Department, Brookhaven Police Department, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Mississippi Department of Corrections and King’s Daughters Medical Center EMS — gathered in the parking lot of the former Hudgey’s Family Restaurant on Brookway Boulevard.

After a word of welcome and prayer from organizer and firefighter Justin Graves, the group ran west along the boulevard to a point near I-55 before turning and heading back to the starting point. Law enforcement and firefighters provided escorts and safety for participants and EMS followed to provide assistance, if needed.

The total distance covered was approximately 2,977 meters, to represent the number of lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001 in terrorist attacks on the U.S. The run began at 8:46 a.m., the time of the first hit on the Twin Towers.

After all participants had returned to the lot, the group closed with another prayer.

“For just three days of preparation, I think the turnout was very good,” Graves said. “I’m looking forward to doing it again next year.”
