Two BFD firefighters receive certification
Brookhaven’s Board of Aldermen has approved pay raises for two firefighters who recently achieved certification.
Brookhaven Fire Department firefighters Darius Calvin and Richard Edwards graduated Dec. 10 from the National Fire Protection Association 1001 Firefighter I-II course conducted at the Mississippi State Fire Academy in Jackson.
The intense NFPA course lasts seven weeks and includes classroom and hands-on instruction in fire behavior, fire suppression, rescue, incident command, hazardous materials and other fire-related topics. The course exceeds the state’s minimum training standards.
BFD Chief Tony Weeks updated the city board Tuesday on the two men’s achievement and asked that their pay be adjusted from non-certified firefighter to certified firefighter rates.
The board unanimously approved the pay raises, an increase from $28,084.80 to $31,010.31 annually.
The department currently employs 34 certified firefighters and two non-certified.
