Shooting suspect identified in death of Brookhaven 18-year-old

Police have identified the person they believe is responsible for the shooting death of Kemon Funchess, 18, on Wednesday.

Kentory Benson Jr., also 18, was arrested Wednesday night at the Hines Street crime scene and charged with violating parole. He was wearing an ankle monitor at the time.

“We know at this time that Benson was the shooter,” said BPD Chief Kenneth Collins.

Collins said investigators have recovered the weapon they believe was used in the crime and charges for Benson will be upgraded in the next few days.

At 9:13 p.m. Wednesday, officers from the Brookhaven Police Department responded to a call of shots fired on Hines Street.

Officers arrived at 704 Hines St. and found a man in the back yard of the home who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. He was later identified as Kemon Funchess, of 216 Lumber St., according to Chief Collins.
