COVID-19 update: 5,533 new cases, 25 new deaths reported Friday

More than 23,500 new cases of COVID-19 and 97 deaths have been reported in Mississippi this week.

The Mississippi State Department of Health has reported 23,573 new cases of the virus, including 5,533 Friday — an average of 5,893 each day of the four-day period. The department has recorded 717,666 cases and 10,831 deaths to-date.

Lincoln County reported 69 new cases Friday, elevating the county’s totals to 7,216 cases and 142 related deaths.

Each of Lincoln’s neighboring counties reported new cases, though none reported new deaths.

  • Amite — 2,869 cases (31 new) and 159 deaths
  • Copiah — 6,300 cases (68 new) and 97 deaths
  • Franklin — 1,751 cases (15 new) and 34 deaths
  • Jefferson — 1,356 cases (seven new) and 35 deaths
  • Lawrence — 3,199 cases (23 new) and 45 deaths
  • Pike — 8,157 cases (45 new) and 161 deaths
  • Walthall — 3,152 cases (31 new) and 70 deaths

Issaquena remains the county with the least deaths at seven and the fewest cases — 240 — though three new cases were reported Friday.

Hinds, Harrison and DeSoto counties remain the areas with the most cases and deaths. DeSoto reported 243 new cases to reach 45,754, with 479 deaths. Harrison reported 406 new cases to reach 46,620, with four new deaths to rise to 589. Hinds County recorded 254 new cases to increase to 49,094 and 690 related fatalities.

Forty-three of Mississippi’s 82 counties have reported fewer than 100 deaths each.
