Area baseball roundup: BA blows out Simpson Academy

Here’s a look at how area high school baseball teams have fared in recent action.
Brookhaven Academy
A 13-0 blowout win over Simpson Academy moved Brookhaven Academy to 8-3 on the season Monday night in Mendenhall.
Coach Caleb Upton’s team is back at home hosting Simpson on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
The last meeting between the schools before Monday was a three-game playoff series in 2021. Simpson Academy won that second-round matchup 2-1with a 15-4 victory in the deciding game.
Monday, Caston Thompson and Easton Boyte both hits doubles to pace BA at the plate. Thompson, Boyte and Avery Griffin had two hits each while Judson Griffin, Avery Griffin, Michael Watts and Noah Gatlin each drove in a pair of runs. Boyte had a team high 3 RBIs.
Judson Griffin got the win on the mound in five innings. He struck out five, walked one and scattered seven hits on 95 pitches.
BA will host Canton Academy on Friday and then begin district play next week by hosting Bowling Green on Tuesday.
Brookhaven High
It was a successful trip for Brookhaven High over the weekend as the Panthers made their annual pilgrimage to play in the Trey Altick Prep Classic in Monroe, Louisiana.
Brookhaven High (6-3) got a 9-8 win over Beekman High (Louisiana.), a 10-8 victory against Vilonia High (Arkansas) and a runaway 11-2 decision against West Ouachita (Louisiana). The lone loss of the weekend was a 9-6 loss to West Ouachita that started late on Saturday night.
White’s team used 18 hits in getting the big win over West Ouachita on Friday. Jake Meilstrup, Jacob Rushing, JP Wallace and Bryson Porter all had three hits each for the Panthers. Wallace drove in three runs while Meilstrup and Elijah Calcote had two RBIs each.
Senior Maney Miller pitched the win for BHS. Miller sturck out 10 and gave up four hits. Meilstrup, Drew Nelson and Walker Moak all pitched against Beekman while Miller, Nelson and Calcote made pitching appearances against Vilonia.
The Panthers are back on Moyer Field Saturday when they’ll host Terry High for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
Region play starts for BHS on Friday, March 18 by hosting Florence High.
Enterprise
Coach Josh Garrett’s young group of Yellow Jackets got a marquee win this weekend with a 3-1 victory over a strong North Pike team.
Senior pitcher Matthew Burns got the win after throwing 105 pitches in 4.2 innings. Burns struck out 10, walked five and gave up two hits.
A pair of Zach Brister homeruns provided all three runs for Enterprise at the plate. EAC is scheduled to be back at home on March 11 against Salem.
Wesson
The Cobras moved to 6-3 on the season with a 13-7 win over Tylertown on Monday night. Wesson has now won four games in a row including an 11-4 victory over Brookhaven High, a 13-1 blowout of McComb High and a 9-2 victory over West Lincoln.
Wesson coach Vance Windom saw Brett Boutwell lead his team at the plate on Monday with a single, a double and a triple. Boutwell drove in two runs as did Derrick Morgan, Preston Selmon and Turner Green. Green hit a double and Morgan hit a triple for the Cobras.
Brett Boutwell also got credit for the pitching win.
Wesson is now 1-0 in region play and is scheduled to return the game at Tylertown on Friday.
