Brookhaven Academy baseball ends season and begins playoffs with Cathedral

The Brookhaven Academy baseball team currently sits 20-8 on the season and the team won MAIS District 4-5A by going 9-3 in division play against Oak Forest Academy, Columbia Academy, Bowling Green School and Silliman Institute.
The Cougars wrapped up the regular season with a pair of non-division games this week as they played at Cathedral School in Natchez on Thursday for the Green Wave’s senior night.
Cathedral was then to return the favor on Friday by coming to Williams-Gillis Ballpark to play BA for the Cougar’s senior night.
And in a bit of irony, the two teams will again meet next week for a 3-game series in the first round of the MAIS 5A playoffs.
Brookhaven Academy coach Caleb Upton is a Cathedral grad, so playing games at Chester-Willis Field in Natchez is nothing new for him, but maybe the teams wouldn’t have chosen to meet so late in the season if they’d know that a playoff matchup was looming.
On Thursday, Cathedral won in walk-off fashion by a 4-3 final score in Natchez.
Junior Easton Boyte threw a complete game for BA and gave up just five hits and two earned runs. Boyte struck out five and walked four on 106 pitches.
A pair of pitchers combined for Cathedral to limit the Cougars to four hits. Judson Griffin, Avery Griffin, Trevor Fortenberry and Michael Watts all hit safely for Upton’s team. Watts had the lone RBI for BA in the game.
Noah Russ struck out eight and walked six for Cathedral in the start on the mound. Mason Moore came in for Russ and faced the final BA batter of the game in relief.
The schedule for next week is that Cathedral will host game one on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Game two will start at BA on Friday at 4:30 p.m. If a third and deciding game is needed, it will begin at the conclusion of game two on Friday.
