The Brookhaven High Panthers have their eyes on the prize as Saturday they’ll compete in Pearl for the MHSAA 5A State Championship in track and field.
BHS heads to the meet at Pearl High with confidence after both the boys’ and girls’ teams won the 5A South State meet last weekend in Hattiesburg.
First-place finishers for BHS in the boys’ competition at Hattiesburg High were senior Javonta Stewart (200-meter dash), senior Grayson Childress (800-meter run, 1600-meter run), senior Sam Arnold (3200-meter run) and junior Brodie Ezell (discus).
The Panthers also swept the relays in winning the 4×100, 4×200, 4×400 and 4×800 relays.
First-place finishers in the girls’ competition for the Panthers were Kyja Willis (100-meter dash) and senior Aniya Cook (200-meter dash). The team also won the 4×800 relay race and the 4×200 relay.
The BHS track teams are coached by Darien Dorsey, Tonya Johns, Shannon Knott and Sandra Banks.
After sweeping the Division 6-5A, Region 3-5A and 5A South State meets, the Panthers are on the doorstep of capping a dominating season.
“We’ve got to continue to do what we’ve been doing all year,” said Dorsey. “The message has been to focus over our final five days of practice and preparation so that we can make history. We’ve got to continue to compete and execute in our individual races and relays.”
