Schools closing due to anticipated severe weather

Brookhaven, Lincoln County and Lawrence County schools have all announced closures for Wednesday, Dec. 14, due to the anticipation of severe weather in the area.

“Due to the approaching weather and the time frame of the severity of it, we will close school tomorrow, Wednesday, Dec 14. Thank you all and be safe!” Brookhaven Superintendent Dr. Rod Henderson posted online Tuesday night.

Lincoln County Superintendent Dr. David Martin issued the following statement:

“We have been monitoring the weather and predictions have changed several times over the past 24 hours. At this time it appears we will have severe weather in the morning and throughout the day. There is also possibility of flooding as well. At this time we will close school for Wednesday, December 14th. We plan to reopen Thursday, December 15th following our regular schedule.”

The Lawrence County School District issued this statement:

“Due to the threat of severe weather, all Lawrence County School District campuses and offices will be closed Wednesday, December 14, 2022. After consulting with local emergency management officials, the decision to cancel all classes and activities was made due to safety concerns. Severe weather including flooding, severe thunderstorms, and a tornado risk is possible as early as 1 a.m. and is predicted to continue throughout the afternoon. Please stay safe and weather aware during this time. Normal operations are scheduled to resume Thursday, December 15.”

No other area schools had issued public statements as of 9:15 p.m. Tuesday.
