The Brookhaven High senior duo of Robert Adcock and Jeremiah Layton went into the MHSAA 5A Tennis Individual State Tournament as the top seeded team in the bracket.

In a weather delayed event, the duo didn’t let long wait times in between matches slow them down as they marched through the bracket of 16 doubles duos to earn the 2023 5A State Doubles Championship on Wednesday.

It’s the second individual state title of his career for Adcock, who won a mixed doubles title as a sophomore with Caroline Kilpatrick.

Kilpatrick and Lucy Allen were the 5A girls doubles defending champs, but saw their tournament run ended with a loss in the finals to finish as 5A runners-up in 2023.

Adcock has already signed to continue his tennis career at Copiah-Lincoln CC. Layton plans to sign next week to play tennis at Mississippi Gulf Coast CC.

The duo of Adcock and Layton beat the no. 3 seeded team from Saltillo High (Dalton Teeple and Weston Clayton) in the finals.

Kilpatrick and Allen were also the top seed in their bracket and lost to the no. 3 seeded team from Lafayette (Jenna Lampton and Presleigh Loper) in the championship match.

The rain delayed final was moved to the indoor tennis facility at Ole Miss.

BHS tennis coach Becky Green says the pair of Adcock and Layton had championship aspirations from the start of tournament play.

“Robert and Jeremiah had the goal of winning a boys doubles state championship and they played four matches in two days against some really good players,” said Green. “They never dropped a set and were focused and intense throughout the whole tournament.”
