Bouncy, twitchy, quick, aggressive, fearless.
There’s a long list of superlatives to describe how Bogue Chitto sophomore point guard Devonta “Bam” Thompson plays with the ball in his hands.
Thompson averaged 21.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 6.4 assists, and 8.6 steals per game for a 21-6 Bogue Chitto team that reached the semifinals of the MHSAA 2A state tournament.
For his outstanding play, Thompson has been named The Daily Leader All-Area Boys’ Basketball Most Valuable Player.
The 5-foot-10 Thompson is dynamic with the rock in his hands and has had Bogue Chitto fans talking about his talents since junior high.
A left-hander, Thompson was an All-Area selection last season a freshman.
As a sophomore, he helped the Bobcats to go 8-0 in Region 7-2A regular season play.
Thompson saved his best for the postseason, scoring 43 points in a road win at Velma Jackson in the second round of the MHSAA 2A playoffs.
In that game, the Bobcats beat a VJ team that had Devin Jones, the 2023 MHSAA 2A Mr. Basketball.
The decision makers at the MHSAA need to have Thompson on their short list for Mr. Basketball contenders going future.
With the right mix of continued work and development, he can be among the best guards in the state, not just Southwest Mississippi.
