A Brookhaven city street will soon have a new name.

For years, residents have referred to the little street — aptly named “Little” until now — as “Short Turner.”

Turner Street runs east-west from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to South Washington Street next to Alexander Junior High School. “Short Turner” runs off Turner near the west end for about 35 yards until it dead-ends.

With approval from local residents, city engineers and applicable city departments, the Board of Aldermen voted unanimously Tuesday evening to rename the street to its commonly-known moniker. Shannon Moore, alderman for Ward 2 where the street is located, presented the motion.

The city’s decision will be forwarded to the Mississippi Department of Transportation and maps and 9-1-1 information will be updated for the residences on that street. The street sign will also be changed.
