One person has died as the result of a house fire in Silver Creek, according to Lawrence County Fire Coordinator Donnie Weeks.

A report of a house fire on St. Stephens Road, east of Monticello, was received at 9:26 p.m. Thursday.

“When fire fighters arrived, the house was 60 to 70 percent involved with heavy smoke,” Weeks said.

Fire fighters made entry into the rear of the home, where a woman was found in the back bathroom, he said.

“They got her out, but there was nothing they could do,” Weeks said.

No foul play is suspected, but the cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Lawrence County Coroner Sandra Lambert said Friday morning she could not yet release the victim’s name.
