Overbrook Songwriters Festival returns

What do you get when you put together 31 songwriters and five Brookhaven venues?

You get the fourth Overbrook Songwriters Festival.

Friday and Saturday, Aug. 4-5, these songwriting performers will share their talents and creations at Betty’s Eat Shop and Recess 101 for night shows, and Georgia Blue, Magnolia Blues and Tortilla Soup during the day.

“What makes this festival different is we try to pay something to them,” said festival creator and organizer Shaw Furlow. “For a lot of these songwriter festivals, you’ve got to pay to play. And we don’t want them to have to do that.”

Ed Tree is the weekend headliner performer, beginning his set at 7 p.m. Saturday at Recess 101, on South First Street. 

“The concert is free. Everything is free,” Furlow said. 

The annual event draws artists and music lovers to Brookhaven, adding to the city’s arts scene.

The weekend schedule is as follows. Please note, some performance times overlap.

Friday

Recess 101, beginning at 7 p.m. — Montana Beeson, Tyler Bridge, Shaw Furlow, Rona Barrett Herring, Charlie and Libby Hewitt, Keith Harrelson and Landon Stewart.

Saturday

11 a.m. “until” — Open house at Brookhaven Music Studios, 120 E Cherokee St.

12-1:10 p.m. — Tommy Ike Hailey and Mike Campbell (Georgia Blue); Barry Chauvin and Eric Woods (Tortilla Soup)

1:20-2:30 p.m. — Bryan Batson and Cynthia Brando (Georgia Blue); Bill Romano and John West (Tortilla Soup)

2-3:20 p.m. — Montana Beeson and Guy Pucheu (Magnolia Blues)

2:40-3:50 p.m. — Doc and Katie, and Shelby Martin Anderson (Georgia Blue); Rick Adams and Adrian Parker (Tortilla Soup)

3:30-4:50 p.m. — Keith Harrelson and Tyler Bridge (Magnolia Blues)

4-5:10 p.m. — Gabriel Bass and Mary Alice Vanderwaters (Georgia Blue); Mike J. Case and RT Hall (Tortilla Soup)

5-6:20 p.m. — Beach Bums and Avery Joyce Landrum (Magnolia Blues)

5:20-6:30 p.m. — Steve Judice and Mike Stone (Georgia Blue)

7 p.m. — Ed Tree (Recess 101)

9 p.m. — Nancy Bryant Roppolo and Susan Aysen (Betty’s Eat Shop)

“We’ve got several sponsors this year. Even in tough economic times, these folks came through,” said Furlow. “And of course, thanks to the Brookhaven Tourism Council. None of this could happen without the Tourism Council.”
