When David Sanders was the head boys’ basketball coach at Callaway High, he had many of his former players go on and have successful careers playing at MACCC member schools.

Entering his third year as the head coach at Copiah-Lincoln Community College, Sanders is bringing one of those players to Co-Lin as an assistant coach for the 2023-2024 season.

The school recently announced that Cortez Mitchell has been hired as a men’s basketball assistant coach.

Mitchell replaces Reggie Chambers, who was with Sanders for the last two seasons, including a MACCC championship-winning campaign last season.

After being part of three state championship winning teams at Callaway for Sanders, Mitchell then went to Pearl River Community College where he also helped the Wildcats to a MACCC state title during his freshman season.

Mitchell was twice an NJCAA All-Region 23 selection at Pearl River as he averaged 13 points per game during his time in Poplarville.

From there, Mitchell signed with Charleston Southern University where he played in a combined 59 games from 2016-2018 while averaging 10.2 points per game.

Most recently, Mitchell has been on the staff at Charleston Southern as the video coordinator on the men’s basketball staff.
