A new place to stop has come to North Jackson Street in Brookhaven.
Stop signs have been installed at the intersection of North Jackson and Vivian Merritt streets, making the intersection into a 3-way stop.
A stop sign was already in place at the end of Vivian Merritt where it tees into North Jackson. The new signs were added for northbound and southbound traffic on North Jackson Street.
Vivian Merritt Street leads through a neighborhood and onto the campus of Mamie Martin Elementary School. Much of the morning and afternoon traffic along this route on weekdays is school-related.
“These were put up because we were having wrecks over there in that location,” said Ward 6 Alderman Andre’ Spiller. “They don’t have to be permanent but we want to help deter people from speeding on North Jackson and having wrecks. There have been two or three recently near that corner.”
The new stop signs are currently covered by black plastic, but will soon be uncovered and enforced for motorists.
