Fifty Plus Club welcomes new members

Published 7:00 am Sunday, October 29, 2023

Lynda Brister, Vice President, opened the Oct. 19 Fifty Plus meeting  welcoming everyone, including three new members, Larry Banes and his wife Diane, of Hazlehurst, and Geraldine Overstreet of Crystal Springs.   Alton Ricks of Wesson then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and our National Anthem.

Birthdays and Anniversaries for October were recognized with only one birthday, Shirley Montgomery of Brookhaven.

Our devotion was brought by Linda Johnson on “True Joy Comes From God.” Whatever your circumstances may be, good or bad, you can find Joy.  Some days Joy is generously given to us like glistering sunlight. Other dark and gray days we are depressed and life feels endless. Yet joy is attainable.  Search for it as for a hidden treasure. Begin by remembering God created this day. Recall that God is in your presence. God has promised that He will always be with us. Your mood will then gradually lighten and Joy will come.

Our program speaker was Geraldine Overstreet. She lives in Crystal Springs and in many ways is a very talented lady. Speaking to a group of Senior Adults, she asked the question “What does living the good life mean to you?”  Several responses were given — good health, having a family, being able to attend different activities.  She then asked, “Think back when you were a young person. What did living the good life mean to you then?”  Again several responses were given — making money, getting rich, getting away from home, on my own.

Ms. Overstreet then gave a short testimony of her life growing up. Life is a journey. It can be hard and we make mistakes. We also learn that material things don’t really matter. She then ended referring to two great books, “Jesus is Calling” by Sarah Young, and “Come Away My Beloved” by Frances Roberts, by reading some inspiring words from one of the books.

Prior to our lunch we had a fun time singing great praises to our Lord.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, Nov. 9. No meeting in December.  January meeting will be Thursday the 25.
