The Brookhaven School District will soon upgrade its internet speeds.

At its recent meeting, the Brookhaven School Board approved advertising for bids to replace outdated multi-mode fiber optics with single-mode fiber optics.

Board member Patrick Brown, an IT professional, said the multi-mode lines provide up to 1 gig transfer rates, whereas the single-mode lines would provide speeds up to 10 gigs. The upgrades will be district-wide.

“It will definitely improve network speeds for Brookhaven,” Brown said.

“We are contributing 20 percent of (the cost for) this, so we will have the opportunity to reject or accept the bids, correct?” board member Jason Childress asked.

“Correct,” Superintendent Rod Henderson responded.

The board voted unanimously in support of advertising for bids.

In other business, the board:

• Approved a list of requests of students to transfer into the district from county schools. BSD secretary Tracey Williams said the students attended the entire year so far, but paperwork had not yet been completed.

• Approved requests to hire additional employees for Child Nutrition and the substitute teachers list.

• Approved multiple organization fundraisers and out-of-state field trip requests.
