Lawrence County sends McComb home from MHSAA 4A playoffs

The Lawrence County Cougars knocked McComb High from the ranks of the unbeaten Friday on the road. The 28-25 win for LC over a McComb team that had been 11-0 puts the Cougars into the third round of the MHSAA 4A playoffs next week against Poplarville.

McComb High came into its MHSAA 4A second round playoff matchup with Lawrence County sporting an 11-0 record.

Mark it 11-1 now as LC coach Jesse Anderson and his Cougars used their potent rushing attack to ground the McComb air game in a 28-25 win.

The Cougars (7-5) will next play in the third round on Friday at Poplarville (9-3). The other three 4A quarterfinal games are Louisville (12-0) versus Caledonia (6-5), West Lauderdale (11-1) versus Houston (10-1), and Columbia (12-0) versus Pass Christian (9-2).

Lawrence County led McComb 8-7 after the first quarter and trailed 19-14 at the halftime break. The Cougars then took a 22-19 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Anderson is now 5-4 in the playoffs as the head coach at his alma mater in his six seasons as head coach. His five postseason wins is the most in program history and his 39 career victories only trail former coach Mike Davis (52-39) all-time.
