At Brookhaven Academy, they often refer to senior right-hand pitcher Matt Newman as “Big Matt” around campus. The lanky, nearly 6-foot-5 Newman has transitioned into a reliable arm for the Cougar baseball program since transferring from West Lincoln as a sophomore.

Newman recently made sure his baseball career will continue by signing a letter-of-intent to next play for the Southwest Mississippi Community College Bears.

Last season, Newman was primarily a reliever for Brookhaven Academy and coach Caleb Upton. This season, BA baseball will be under the leadership of Randy Spring, the longtime Brookhaven High head coach who’s most recently been an assistant coach for the Cougars.

Newman is also a key player on the pitch for the Brookhaven Academy soccer teams.

Spring sees Newman stepping up in 2023 to be a larger factor on the mound for the Cougars.

“Matt has worked extremely hard to get his game to a higher level,” said Spring. “He did a good job in his role last year and will take on a greater role for us this year. Physically, he is continuing to grow. He is nearly 6-foot-5 with good athleticism and a good, loose arm. I think his best days are ahead of him.”
