Brookhaven sweeps Loyd Star soccer tournament finals

It was a good night for the Brookhaven High soccer teams on Saturday as they won both brackets in the postponed Loyd Star soccer tournament played at the Hansel King Sports Complex. The event had been moved back a week following wet weather the prior weekend.

The BHS girls’ team, coached by Dustin Bairfield, beat Loyd Star in penalty kicks after the game ended tied 2-2 in regulation. Bairfield’s team is off to an 8-1 start this season. Freshman Eliza Smith and freshman Isabella Iles scored the two regulation goals for the Panthers against Loyd Star. Both Brookhaven High teams will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 28 when they’ll host Franklin County.

The Brookhaven High boys’ team and coach Aaron Ayers are 6-3 to begin the 2023-2024 season and got a goal from sophomore Crews Stewart to beat Loyd Star 1-0 in the tournament finals on Saturday. Both BHS teams defeated Morton High in the opening games of tournament play on Saturday. The BHS girls won 6-0 and the boys’ team won 3-2.
