A recent rash of auto thefts and burglaries in Brookhaven has prompted Police Chief Kenneth Collins to urge citizens to be proactive.

“Be aware of leaving your vehicles with the keys in them, unattended and running, at gas stations, stores, or any other place,” Collins said. “Be aware there is a group of people riding around day and night looking to take your vehicle.”

Approximately six vehicles have been stolen recently, the chief said.

“Please, stop leaving your keys in your car, or with it running,” Collins said. “Or with your kids in them, because it could have a tragic ending.”

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, approximately 11 percent of car thefts are due to keys or key fobs being left in the vehicle.

“We need your help to help you,” said the chief.
