Brookhaven Police called off a pursuit Friday morning after speeds exceeded 100 mph, according to Chief Kenneth Collins.

A person suspected of shoplifting at Walmart left the store and headed south on Interstate 55 at approximately 8:20 a.m. When an officer attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle accelerated, fleeing toward Pike County.

“When speed got up in excess of over 100 mph, we called it off. It’s just too dangerous,” Collins said. “But we have the tag number and security videos, and we’ll get warrants.”

The chief cautioned shoppers and business owners/employees to be aware of shoplifters, but not to approach them or attempt to apprehend them.

“You never know how people are going to act these days,” Collins said. “We just need the best information you can give us.”
