Lawrence County Schools are closed today, Friday, Jan. 12, due to possible severe weather moving into and through the area.

Brookhaven School District, Lincoln County School District, Brookhaven Academy and other surrounding schools will continue to monitor the weather throughout the day.

Parents and guardians should keep phones and school alert devices charged and ready, should an alert need to be issued.

As of 8 a.m., 15 Mississippi counties were under a National Weather Service-issued tornado watch, meaning conditions were favorable for the development of one or more tornadoes. Counties under the watch include Lincoln, Lawrence, Copiah, Franklin and Jefferson.
