The Brookhaven Academy Cougars handed head coach Randy Spring his first win as the leader of the program Monday night with a resounding 14-1 win over the visiting Centreville Academy Tigers.
Spring, who’s previously been the head baseball coach at Brookhaven High, was an assistant for former coach Caleb Upton before announcing his move to the head coaching position when Upton took an assistant job at Germantown High School.
“I was very pleased with our effort,” said Spring. “Our pitchers threw strikes, and we played pretty solid defense. We had some great at bats and hit some balls hard. It was definitely a good way to start the season.”
With the Brookhaven Academy soccer team still in season, Spring didn’t have his complete roster on Monday, but the Cougars had more than enough pop in their bats as they scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and then added eight runs in the bottom of the eighth.
The Cougars outhit CA 9-1 and the visiting Tigers were also undone by four errors.
Junior Carter Case, junior Kaleb Bullock and senior Sam Stevens had a double apiece to lead the BA offensive attack.
Freshman catcher Tucker Tarver drove in a team high three runs while Stevens, Case and Bullock had two RBIs each. Also driving in a run was junior Liam Magee.
Senior second baseman Sam Evans had one hit and scored a run from his leadoff position. Senior shortstop Avery Griffin, a Copiah-Lincoln baseball signee, had one hit and drew one walk while scoring two runs. Sophomore Walt Smith scored two runs after getting onboard via a hit and a walk.
Freshman Carter Palmer also scored a run for the Cougars and freshman Cohen Boyd Scored two runs as well.
Sophomore Caleb Authement drew the start on the mound and gave up no hits and one walk while striking out seven over three innings. Smith pitched the final two innings, striking out three and giving up one hit, one run and one walk.
Brookhaven Academy will return the game to CA on Thursday, Feb. 8. The Cougars are scheduled to play at Amite School Center on Mon, Feb. 12 and to be back in the friendly confines of Williams-Gillis Ball Park on Tuesday, Feb. 13 when they’ll host Adams County Christian School for a 6:30 p.m. varsity first pitch.
