Brookhaven Academy student Parker Miller has been selected at the Mississippi recipient of The Billy Michal Student Leadership Award.

The national award is presented annually to one student from each state and the District of Columbia who embodies the American spirit in his or her community and demonstrates values of leadership, teamwork, tolerance, creativity, and perseverance.

The 51 selected student leadership award winners will travel to New Orleans in May to attend the 2024 American Spirit Awards where they will represent their state at the event. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in leadership activities, explore New Orleans, and receive exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the Museum.

When six-year-old Billy Michal from Zimmerman, Louisiana, helped his one-room school win a statewide scrap metal collection contest during World War II, he understood that every citizen — no matter how small — could contribute to our victory in the war. His example, and the actions of millions of other students on the Home Front, reminds us that service to country and community helps create active, engaged citizens. Through this award, The National WWII Museum promotes these values to students nationwide and honors those who exemplify them.

Awardees were selected based on their demonstrated commitment to making a positive contribution to their school, community, country, and/or the world.

A junior at BA, Miller was nominated by school counselor Amy Spring, based on the recommendation of history teacher Brooks Smith.

“It’s a special honor to receive this award,” Parker said. “I’m excited to represent my school, community, and the state of Mississippi as this year’s recipient. I am thankful I was chosen!”

After graduation, Miller plans to attend The University of Mississippi to pursue a degree in Sports Media/Sports Broadcasting or Public Policy/Pre-Law.

A Brookhaven native, Miller is the son of Dr. Eric Miller and Shannon Miller. Among other awards and activities, he has been a member of the BA soccer, archery and golf teams; was class president for his freshman, sophomore and junior years; serves as Student Council vice president and is president-elect for the next school year; and is a member of such clubs as the National Honor Society, Quiz Bowl, Video Production Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
