BHS Track sweeps team titles at annual Speed Trials

The Brookhaven High Track and Field team got the month off with two wins on Friday in the annual BHS Speed Trials hosted by the school on March 1.

Coached by Darien Dorsey, Tonya Johns, Jocelyn Robinson and Peter Kettle, the BHS T&F teams will next compete on Friday, March 8 at Columbia High.

The Brookhaven High girls are gunning for a third straight MHSAA 5A state track and field title in 2024. On Friday, first placed girls’ finishers for Brookhaven High included Chrisiyona Quarles (200-meter dash, 400-meter dash), Jasmine Roberston (800-meter run) and Isabella Iles (1,600 meter-run, 3,200 meter-run).

Robertson, Quarles, Sierra Edwards and Jay’sha Johnson won the 4×400 relay and Robertson, Iles, Ariyana Graham and Annabelle Summers won the 4×800 relay.

Aniyah Williams won the long jump for BHS and her teammate Kema Roberts had the longest discus throw of the day.

On the boy’s side of the competition, the Panthers got first place finishes from Cooper Wallace (800-meter run, 1,600 meter-run) and Coleman Knott (3,200 meter-run).

The BHS boys’ team beat out Tylertown High while the girl’s team outpointed McComb High. Other schools competing included South Pike, Forest Hill, West Lincoln, Franklin County, Warren Central, Hazlehurst High, Natchez High, Lawrence County and Loyd Star.
