Baseball roundup: BA Cougars outscore Cathedral, BHS pounds Mize

Here is a look at how area high school baseball teams have fared in a week filled with rainouts and cancellations.

 

Brookhaven Academy 15, Cathedral 10

The Cougars and coach Randy Spring moved to 7-3 on the season by outscoring the Cathedral School Green Wave in a wild game Thursday night in Natchez.

Cathedral scored at least one run in each of the first four innings to lead 7-0 after four complete innings. The BA offense responded with 13 runs in the top of the fifth inning to take control of the game. The Cougars added two more runs in the top of the sixth as they outhit Cathedral 12-8, but did commit six errors in the field.

Senior Matthew Newman, who’s signed to next play at Southwest Mississippi CC, led the Cougar offense with five RBIs. Caleb Authment drove in three runs and hit a double and senior Avery Griffin, a Copiah-Lincoln CC signee, also drove in three runs for BA.

Spring’s team used four pitchers in the win while Cathedral had five different pitchers make an appearance on the mound. BA is scheduled to play Cathedral again on Monday at 2 p.m. in a game that will be played at Southwest Mississippi CC in Summit. On Tuesday, BA will play against Copiah Academy at 11:30 a.m. in Summit. BA beat Copiah Academy 17-7 when the school last played on Feb. 22.

 

Brookhaven High 10, Mize 1

The 5A Brookhaven High Panthers (8-2) handed the 2A Mize Bulldogs (7-2) their second loss of the season on Thursday in Smith County.

BHS scored once in the third, once in the fourth, twice in the fifth and then got three runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh behind 12 hits.

Last weekend the Panthers made their annual trip to the Trey Altick Prep Classic held yearly in the Monroe area. There, BHS and coach Matt White lost their first game to John Curtis Christian School from River Ridge, Louisiana by an 8-3 score.

The Panthers bounced back to beat Dunham School out of Baton Rouge 3-2 and then close the tournament with an 11-4 victory against the Smackover (Ar.) Buckaroos.

Dreamus Harron Jr., Austin Rylee, Drew Nelson and Luke Simmons all saw time on the mound Thursday in the win at Mize. Harron struck out six, walked two and gave up two hits in four innings of work.

At the plate, Rylee, Harron, Nelson, Simmons and EJ Ratliff each hit a double for the Panthers. Simmons and Rylee each drove in two runs while Nelson, Harron, DJ Washington and Zack McGehee had one RBI apiece against Mize.

The Panthers are scheduled to play Lawrence County on Tuesday, March 12 and the Wesson Cobras on Thursday, March 14; both of those games will be at Southwest Community College in Summit.

 

Enterprise 12, E. Marion 0

Enterprise 20, E. Marion 0

Enterprise began Region 8-1A play this week with back-to-back blowout wins over East Marion on Wednesday and Thursday.

Coach Austin Hood and the Yellow Jackets (7-4) got a home run from Prewitt Falvey and a double from Nick Harris on Wednesday in a win at home that took four innings to finish. Starting pitcher Cole Jordan gave up one hit, walked one and struck out five for EAC on Wednesday.

The matchup on Thursday at East Marion took three innings as starting pitcher Ryder Martin struck out four and gave up one hit. Falvey again homered while Parker Harris, Nick Harris and Jiles Williams all had a double apiece at the plate.

Kelly Burgess led the EAC offense with four RBIs on Thursday while Falvey also drove in four runs.

Lawrence County 8, Loyd Star 4

The homestanding Lawrence County Cougars (3-4) never trailed on Thursday in picking up a win over the visiting Loyd Star Hornets (5-3) in Monticello.

Coach Seth Avants and Lawrence County got a nine-strikeout performance from pitcher Caden Case. Josh Sandifer drove in a team best three runs for the Cougars at the plate. Case, Grey Boyd and Bryce Prestridge each had one RBI as well on Thursday for LC.

Caden White, Nathan Mills and Brandon Burt hit a double apiece for Loyd Star coach Jared Britt. White drove in one run and senior Colby Terrell drove in one run as well.

The loss broke a four-game win streak for LS.

Lawrence County is scheduled to face Brookhaven High at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12 at Southwest Mississippi CC in Summit. The Cougars play on March 14 at Southwest Mississippi CC when they’ll face Parklane Academy at 7 p.m.

Tylertown 9, W. Lincoln 5

West Lincoln (6-3) led 4-3 after three complete innings on Tuesday against Tylertown (3-5), only to see the visiting Chiefs score three runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth to secure the win.

Junior Korben Altman led the Bears and coaches Tony and Craig Davis with a double at the plate. Altman had one RBI as did Taylor Myers, Caden Seay and Carson Temple.

West Lincoln is scheduled to play at Salem on Saturday, March 9 and then play at East Marion on Monday, March 11. The Bears will then host East Marion and Port Gibson for a pair of games on Tuesday, March 12.
