National Weather Service warns of heavy rainfall for turkey season opener

BROOKHAVEN — Friday’s severe storms dumped 1.26 inches of rain on Lincoln County according to the National Weather Service in Jackson. More heavy rainfall is expected to come this week with a risk of flash flooding for the warning area just in time for opening weekend of turkey season.

Sunshine is in the forecast for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday so enjoy it while it lasts.

NWS Jackson warns the heavy rainfall could come late Thursday to Saturday night. Localized flash flooding is possible with low lying areas and urban areas at risk. Minor river flooding is also possible with these storms.

At this time, there is a 50 percent chance of rain Thursday with showers and thunderstorms coming after 1 p.m. Thursday night could be just as wet with a 60 percent chances of rain.

Friday is the opening day of Mississippi’s spring turkey season for all hunters, youth hunters had their opener on March 8. Rain chances are 80 percent for the area with gusts reaching 20 mph. Saturday will have a 40 percent chance of rain and Sunday will be a 30 percent chance of rain.
