Loyd Star wins 2 in Spring Break baseball play

The Loyd Star Hornets played two and won two on Monday in Spring Break baseball hosted by Southwest Community College in Summit.

The MHSAA 2A Hornets took on a MAIS foe in one game, beating the Adams County Christian School Rebels 11-3.

The other opponent for LS was North Pike, a team they had already beaten this season. Loyd Star made it two in a row on Monday, beating the MHSAA 5A Jaguars 8-2.

Freshman Phillip Ross Spencer went five innings on the mound, striking out six Rebels from ACCS in five innings.

ACCS jumped ahead 3-0 after the top of the first inning. Trailing 3-2 after four innings, Loyd Star exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Hornets got five hits and saw ACCS commit four errors.

Colby Terrell had the lone extra base hit against ACCS with a double for Loyd Star. Terrell had two hits, drove in two runs, and scored two runs himself.

Loyd Star beat North Pike 8-6 when the teams last met on Feb. 29.

Just like in the first game, North Pike led early, 2-0 after the fir inning. Trailing 2-1 after five complete, Loyd Star got five runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to earn the win for coach Jared Britt.

Sophomore Riley Case pitched a complete game to earn the win. Case struck out two, walked three and gave up two earned runs on six hits.

Senior slugger Nathan Mills had a big day at the plage, hitting a double and a triple.

The man who batted two spots behind Mills in the lineup, senior Jaden Lea, drove in four runs and hit a double. Both Brandon Burt and Kayne Case had two hits each for the Loyd Star offense. Second baseman Mason Smith also hit safely for the Hornets.

Loyd Star, now 7-3 on the season, will next play on March 19 on the road at Madison-St. Joe.
