DA presents upcoming law enforcement officer trainings

Two law enforcement officer training opportunities were presented to the Brookhaven Board of Aldermen Tuesday by District Attorney Brendon Adams.

The first is a courtroom testimony training in Pike County on March 28. Both the DA’s office and volunteer defense attorneys will question officers on the witness stand, to give them an idea of what to expect when they are called upon to testify in a trial.

The next is a training on fentanyl at the Lincoln Civic Center April 4. Presented in partnership with the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office and the Fentanyl Strike Force Team, the training will help officers in identifying the deadly drug, using NARCAN to combat its effects, and being safe and effective in cases involving fentanyl.

“I want to make sure our officers are doing everything effectively, but at the end of the day, I want them to make it home safely,” Adams said. “That is my number one goal.”

The DA also told the board that he and his team are meeting with every employee of the Police Department at least once per month.

“We’re working on tips to help them do their jobs more effectively,” Adams said, expressing thanks to Chief Kenneth Collins for working in partnership with his office.

Investigators are also meeting with the DA’s office prior to grand juries in order to review files and address any potential issues.

Adams said the desire is to enable officers to have all the materials needed for a case and be prepared for what they will encounter in a grand jury or trial prior to being there, especially if they have never had to do that before.
