A Wednesday afternoon fire in Lawrence County has resulted in one death.

At approximately 5 p.m., March 20, Monticello Fire Department and Lawrence County Fire Department were dispatched to smoke rising from the roof of a house on Hwy. 184 W Extension.

The first unit on the scene reported smoke and flames from an end door, with heavy smoke throughout the home. Within a couple of minutes, the first fire engine was on the scene, according to Lawrence County Fire Coordinator Donnie Weeks.

Firefighters saw the resident’s vehicle in the yard and made quick entry, where the resident was found on the floor, unresponsive. The person was removed from the home, where firefighters and Lifeguard personnel performed life-saving practices.

Other firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, and the home’s resident was transported to Lawrence County Hospital, where they later died.

“We want to thank all of our firemen on a quick response,” said Weeks. “Great work, guys, giving the resident the only chance at life. God bless each of you and the family.”
