MDOT asks teen drivers to P.R.O.M. — Please Return On Monday

As prom season approaches, the Mississippi Department of Transportation has teamed with the Mississippi Highway Patrol and Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services to encourage safe driving habits and educate students on the potentially dire consequences of poor choices made on prom night, by asking drivers to Please Return On Monday (PROM).

Prom is a memorable rite of passage for many high school students, but the risk of accidents increases along with the festivities, particularly with inexperienced drivers on the road. The excitement and celebrations surrounding prom can sometimes overshadow the importance of safe driving practices. But it is crucial to remember that a single reckless decision could have life-altering consequences.

“We all want students to have a memorable and enjoyable prom experience, but above all, we want them to return home safely,” said MDOT Executive Director Brad White. “We cannot emphasize the importance of making responsible decisions behind the wheel enough. Let’s make sure everyone returns to school safely on Monday.”

To promote safe driving, MDOT offers the following tips:

• Plan ahead. Make transportation arrangements in advance if necessary.

• Avoid distractions. Put away cell phones and other distractions while driving.

• Buckle up. Ensure everyone in the vehicle wears a seatbelt.

• Stay sober. Avoid alcohol or other substances that impair your ability to drive safely.

• Stay alert. Be aware of your surroundings and anticipate the actions of other drivers.

The PROM campaign encourages prom-bound students to understand the consequences of not buckling up, drinking and driving, or texting and driving. To learn more call 800-443-1000 or email PROM@mdrs.ms.gov.
