Jail awaits anyone who drives around a school bus with its stop sign extended.

“Anyone running around school buses with their stop signs out, we’re going to lock you up,” Brookhaven Police Chief Kenneth Collins warned motorists Monday. “If you go around one of these buses like that, we are going to take you to jail and we’re going to tow your car. The safety of our schools is the most important thing.”

Collins said City Public Works Director Kris Xifos and Brookhaven School District Superintendent Dr. Rod Henderson are working together with him to get yellow flashing lights on speed limit signs in all of the city’s school zones. The lights will be highly-visible reminders to drivers to keep speeds under 15 mph during school hours while traveling in these areas.

Collins said his officers have also recovered an ATV stolen recently from Road & Track in Brookhaven, “and I’d like to thank the members of the community for their help.”

“We all need to do what we can to help,” said Collins. “Crime is 24 hours a day, seven day a week. Crime doesn’t stop. If we don’t work together to keep our city safe, it’s going to fall by the wayside. We need to keep this city safe.”
