Crossing the city

On Good Friday, hundreds of people gathered just off Hwy. 84 in Brookhaven for the formal dedication of The Haven Cross.

The 150-foot-tall cross, which cost approximately $200,000, was erected on the property of Easthaven Baptist Church in February and March. EBC Pastor Dr. Hal Kitchings said the money was donated for the cross, and rather than divert from efforts to help the poor, hungry and others who need help, the cross is intended to be a reminder to Christians to fulfill the Great Commission of the gospel, and as a symbol of hope to non-Christians.

The Good Friday dedication service included a testimony from Dr. Jim Phillips on the impact The Delta Cross in northwest Mississippi has made, a message from Mississippi Baptist Convention Executive Director-Emeritus Dr. Jim Futral, and a song by Halie Kitchings Crane, daughter of pastor Kitchings.

Following the dedication, a group from CenterPoint Church led in carrying a cross from Easthaven to CenterPoint on West Congress Street, approximately 3.5 miles away.
