The Brookhaven Board of Aldermen received updates Tuesday on various projects across the city.

Joshua Davis, of Dungan Engineering, said the North Jackson Bridge Project will undergo its final inspection next week, and the project will be officially complete. The ongoing paving project across the city was scheduled to resume Wednesday by Dickerson & Bowen, weather permitting. Paving would begin on and near Ingram Street. Advertising for bids on the Airport Tree Removal Project is set to begin in two to three weeks, Davis said.

WGK Engineers’ Mike McKenzie told aldermen the Rubbish Pit closure was “off to a good start.” The Board approved pay request No. 1 to G. Rayborn Contracting in the amount of $339,981.25 for work on the project. McKenzie also said boring work had begun to extend the waste water treatment plan line across Hwy. 51 and 84.

City inspector David Fearn told the Board the rest of the houses in the process of being removed would be down by “some time next week.”

Mayor Joe Cox said the bids received Monday on garbage collection for both the City and County would be reviewed and contract negotiations would be completed hopefully prior to the Board’s next meeting on June 18. The effective date for the new contract is Oct. 1.

Ward 2 Alderman Shannon Moore motioned for the City to join the $1.2 billion Kroger Opioid Settlement, which was subsequently approved by the Board.

Moore also stated for the minutes that he wished to declare his support for the city-wide paving project, since he was unable to cast a vote when the decision was made. Moore was present at that previous meeting via phone, and his phone had died or lost signal prior to the vote.

In other business, the Board:

• Approved the reappointment of Robert Tyler to the Housing Authority Board.
• Approved to transfer a 2017 Ford F150 from the Building Inspector to the Airport for use as a courtesy vehicle.
• Approved the resignation of Donna Campbell as Human Resources Director effective June 14, 2024.
• Approved a 5-year length-of-service increase of $1 per hour for Archie Caffie, Street Department laborer, from $15 to $16 hourly.
