2023-2024 Daily Leader All-Area Softball Team

Maddie Kate Britt, Loyd Star

A freshman outfielder, Britt led the Loyd Star offense with a .397 average at the plate in 2024. A repeat All-Area selection, Britt had a team best 29 hits, which included six doubles, three triples and one home run for coach John Smith and the Hornets (16-9-1). An All-Area selection in basketball, she drove in 17 runs this season for the Region 7-2A champs while only striking out four times and earning Co-Offensive MVP honors for the region.

 

Abby Burnette, Loyd Star

A senior infielder, Burnette produced a team leading 21 RBIs for the Hornets (16-9-1). A four-time All-Area selection for softball, she had a team best 10 doubles, while also hitting four triples and putting up a .382 average at the plate for coach John Smith. A shortstop, she shared Co-Defensive MVP honors for Region 7-2A. A Copiah-Lincoln softball signee, Burnette was also the All-Area MVP for soccer as a senior.

 

Layla Burt, Loyd Star

A freshman pitcher, Burt was once again lights out in the circle for the Hornets (16-9-1) in another Region 7-2A winning season. The region MVP, she sported a 1.14 ERA and struck out 139 batters in 123 innings of work. Picked as the All-Area MVP last season, Burt also drove in 17 runs at the plate and hit four doubles while finishing with a .397 batting average for coach John Smith.

 

Kenslie Carter, Wesson

An eighth-grade infielder, Carter is a repeat All-Area selection after again playing beyond her age for the Cobras (24-6) in 2024. Carter led Wesson with 40 hits while sporting a .430 average at the plate for coach Michelle Nunnery. She drove in 30 runs for a Wesson squad that reached the final four of the MHSAA 3A bracket. Of Carter’s hits, four were doubles and two were triples.

 

Caitlin Case, Enterprise

A sophomore infielder, Case is being picked for the All-Area team for a second straight year. Case led the Yellow Jackets (14-11) with 33 hits in 2024. A first baseman, she helped coach Alicia Smith, and the Jackets reach the second round of the MHSAA 1A playoffs. Case hit three doubles, one triple and two home runs while driving in a team high 24 runs for EAC.

 

Morgan Chemin, Brookhaven Academy

A sophomore infielder, Chemin once again showed pop at the plate to earn All-Area honors for a third straight season. She led the Cougars (30-9-1) with a team best seven home runs while batting for a .272 average. Able to play first or second base defensively, Chemin was second on the team this season with 29 runs driven in. She also slugged seven doubles and two triples for coach Lisa Covington and a BA squad that finished as MAIS 5A runners-up.

 

Kensy Covington, Brookhaven Academy

A junior pitcher, Covington again did a little bit of everything for Brookhaven Academy (30-9-1) in the field, in the circle, and at the plate. With her bat, Covington finished with a .330 average and was second on the team with eight doubles. Playing for her mom, BA head coach Lisa Covington, she also hit one triple and three home runs while driving in 27 runs. An infielder when she’s not pitching, she struck out 67 batters in 102 innings and finished with a 2.73 ERA. A repeat All-Area selection who was Defensive MVP last year, she helped lead BA back to the MAIS 5A title series this season.


Zoey Dean, Enterprise

An eighth-grade pitcher and infielder, Dean was one of many outstanding underclassmen on the roster for Enterprise (14-11) in 2024. She led the Yellow Jackets with a .455 average at the plate and drove in 17 runs for coach Alicia Smith. She hit four doubles, two triples and as a pitcher, she tied for the team lead with 41 strikeouts in the circle.

 

Ainsley Gennaro, Loyd Star

A junior infielder, Gennaro was a steady presence at first base and at the plate for a Loyd Star team filled with underclassmen in 2024. She finished tied for third on the team with 25 hits, six of which were doubles. Gennaro also hit one double and drove in 16 runs for coach John Smith and the Hornets (16-9-1).

 

Caroline Hedgepeth, West Lincoln

A sophomore pitcher, Hedgepeth also showed great skill with her bat in 2024 for the Bears (16-10). She led the team with 31 hits, 30 RBIs and seven doubles. Hedgepeth also slugged two triples and one home run while sporting a .378 average at the plate. In the circle, she finished with a 3.04 ERA in 65 innings of work, striking out a team high 91 batters while earning All-Region honors for coach Anita Thornton.

 

Journi Hunt, Brookhaven High School

A sophomore infielder, Hunt absolutely stuffed the stat line for Brookhaven High this season. She led the team with a .507 average at the plate and was second on the team with 35 total hits. She also smacked a team high 12 doubles, five triples, and six home runs. Not surprisingly, Hunt and her big bat led coach Mandy Vinson’s Panthers (15-14) with 38 RBIs in 2024.

 

Erika Lambert, Lawrence County

A sophomore utility player, Lambert can do a little bit of everything for the Lawrence County Cougars (16-11). While playing in the infield or catching in 2024, she helped lead the Cougars to an improved record and a spot in the MHSAA 4A playoffs. At the plate, she finished with a .365 average and was second on the team with 27 hits. Lambert was an extra base machine for coach Alexandria Harris-Roberson, hitting 11 doubles, one triple and one home run. She also finished second on the team with 24 RBIs.

 

Bailey Parks, Brookhaven Academy

A junior catcher, Parks provides an athletic presence behind the plate for the Cougars (30-9-1). A repeat All-Area selection who’s pledged to next play at Copiah-Lincoln CC, Parks was second on the team with 31 runs scored this season. Sporting a .310 batting average, she hit four doubles, on triple and one home run. The single home run was a walk-off winner against Parklane Academy as Parks also drove in 24 runs for coach Lisa Covington and the MAIS 5A runners-up.

 

Jayonna Pendleton, Brookhaven High

A sophomore catcher and leadoff batter, Pendleton was a big part of Brookhaven High showing great improvement in 2024. She led the Panthers (15-14) with 37 hits and sported a .416 average at the plate. Pendleton hit four doubles, drove in 16 runs and scored a team high 37 runs for coach Mandy Vinson and a BHS squad that made the 5A postseason.

 

Ryleigh Purdy, West Lincoln

A sophomore catcher, Purdy is already an experienced leader within the West Lincoln program. She led the Bears (16-10) with a .431 average this season, which included driving in 27 runs for coach Anita Thornton. An All-Region performer, she hit one double and one home run while striking out just six times in 84 plate appearances.

 

Marleigh Grace Russell, Lawrence County

A sophomore infielder and pitcher, Russell led the Cougars (16-11) in most offensive categories to help put the team back in the MHSAA 4A playoffs. She posted a team high .452 batting average and drove in a team best 35 runs. In the circle, Russell threw 70 innings, struck out 47, and finished with a 3.56 ERA.

 

Kaylee Wallace, West Lincoln

A sophomore outfielder, Wallace did everything you want from a leadoff batter as she stayed on the basepath for the Bears in 2024. She batted for a .389 average and scored a team high 39 runs while chalking up 28 hits. Wallace had four doubles, four triples and one home run for the Bears (16-10). Versatile enough to play catcher or infielder as well for coach Anita Thornton, she was Co-Offensive and Defensive MVP for Region 7-2A.

 

Miriam Wallace, Brookhaven Academy

A sophomore outfielder, Wallace once again used her speed and instincts to make defensive plays for the Cougars (30-9-1). A repeat All-Area selection, Wallace used her speed to hit a team best three triples while batting .287 for the MAIS 5A runners up. She also had five doubles, one home run, and 26 RBIs for coach Lisa Covington and her staff.

 

Julianna Wilson, Wesson

A senior catcher, Wilson was one of the unquestioned leaders for a Wesson team that made the MHSAA 3A semifinals. Providing power in the middle of the Cobra (24-6) lineup, Wilson was second on the team with 34 hits in 2024. Tabbed for the All-Area team as a sophomore, Wilson led the Cobras with 40 RBIs while batting for a .436 average. She slugged 10 doubles, two triples and one home run for coach Michelle Nunnery.

 

Emileigh Woodson, Wesson

A junior infielder, Woodson was a strong performer at the plate for Wesson (24-6) this season. Playing third base, Woodson was tabbed for the recently played MAC All-Star game after putting up a .406 average in 2024. She slugged nine doubles and drove in 24 runs for coach Michelle Nunnery and the Cobras.
