When officers arrived at 6:20 at the house, someone on scene said a man had threatened the family with a firearm. Rushing said while officers on the scene were trying to determine what was going on, the subject threatened the officers with the firearm as well. Rushing reported that one of his deputies discharged his firearm at the man.

The man then turned and went back into the house and Rushing said officers on scene were unsure if he was struck or not. Rushing said that was when he and other officers were called to the scene. After approximately two and a half hours of trying to reach the subject, Rushing said they were able to make contact via a phone. Through phone contact they gained admittance into the house where they found that the subject had been struck in the right leg.

The subject was transported by King’s Daughter Medical Center to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Rushing said from what he understands, family members went to Jackson with the subject.

“It was a matter of routine procedural protocol and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is working the case for us,” Rushing said.

The name of the officer has not been released. Calls to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation have not been returned.

“It’s very fortunate no one else was injured,” Rushing said.

Rushing said the officer, according to policy, has been placed on administrative leave.
