West Lincoln surfs Cathedral in sweep

The West Lincoln Bears and the Lady Bears surfed the Green Wave of Natchez Cathedral to collect a sweep in basketball action Monday night at Jack case Gymnasium.

In the girls contest, the Lady Bears defeated the Lady Green Wave 57-38.

In boys action, the Bears knocked off Natchez Cathedral 63-55.

West Lincoln will be in action today as they host the Franklin County Bulldogs. The girls will tip off at 4 p.m., followed by the boys game at 5:30 p.m.

Lady Bears 57, Lady Green Wave 38 

The Lady Bears dominated the first half of action as they carried a 37-23 lead ito halftime.

In the second half, West Lincoln and Cathedral battled in a low-scoring contest with the Lady Bears winning the scoring spree 20-15 in the final two frames to secure the win.

“Taking nothing away from Cathedral, we played poorly,” said West Lincoln coach Lane Young. “We need to play with more hustle and desire if we want to be the team we think we can be.”

Senior forward Hanna Moak powered the Lady Bears with a game-high 25 points and eight rebounds. Skylar Hall chipped in 12 points. Jana Case netted seven points and was the leader on the boards with nine rebounds. Megan Gerald and Layton Sills contributed four points each. Demesha Deer scored two points. Gerald and Deer finished with six rebounds apiece.

Elizabeth Smith was the top scorer for the Lady Green Wave with 14 points. Grayson Bryant had eight points.

West Lincoln 63, Cathedral 55 

The Bears and the Green Waves battles in a close first quarter of action, but West Lincoln managed to secure a 12-6 advantage and outscored Natchez 18-14 to take a 30-20 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Cathedral won the scoring battle against West Lincoln 35-33, but fell short of their rally as the Bears prevail.

“Our younger players played better tonight, but we still need to continue to improve,” said Young. “Cathedral shot the ball well, but we did a poor job finding their shooters. Overall, it was good to get the win.”

Senior guard Keshaun London pumped in a game-high 27 points, four assists and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Bears. Donterrius Taylor chipped in 18 points. Ronnie Edwards poured in 12 points and had seven rebounds. Dominique Chism led on the boards with eight rebounds and scored six points.

Derrion Batieste paced the Green Wave offense with 17 points. Connor Mire and Jamey Coley finished with eight points apiece.

 In junior varsity girls action,  the Lady Bears drained the Lady Green Wave 56-10. Megan Gerald led the charge for the Lady Bears with 19 points. Skylar Hall provided nine points and Makayla Shelton scored six points.
