Men who want to dress well now have a chance to shop locally at a new store tailored to their needs.

The Well-Dressed Man, with brick walls, wooden floors and dark lighting, opened recently in downtown Brookhaven.

Owner Kensy Hoff said she wanted the new store to look homey and masculine.

“I wanted it to look very much like a unique specialty store, and not a big box mall store,” Hoff said. “I wanted it to be a hangout environment. That’s why I’ve got the TV, and I’ve got the cabinets in here. I wanted it to look like that rugged living room. I also hope that it’s a place that when people visit, they feel really excited and welcome, like ‘This is my space when I’m in here. I can look around, and I’m free to try on and get ideas. I don’t feel like I’m pressured into anything that might not be my choice for something that I might buy.’ I want to offer a welcoming environment when they come in so that they want to continue to shop with me, but also continue to shop Brookhaven and shop downtown.”

Hoff has been in retail for eight years. She said she loves making friends with customers and helping them find what they need.

“People are shopping for something,” Hoff said. “And they want to do it with someone that they can have a conversation with and rely on for an honest opinion on how things look or how things work for them.”

She said she’s also excited to get started with a new business downtown where she grew up.

“I remember playing around downtown when I was younger, and when my dad and grandfather had a business, it was downtown,” Hoff said. “I knew exactly where I wanted it to be when it came time to start this, and I wouldn’t have it anywhere else.”

Hoff said men shouldn’t be afraid to wear some color, and they should find a color they like. She also said it was important to find a pair of pants that fit well.

“When you find a good pair of pants that fit, it changes your whole look. It completes an outfit,” Hoff said. “Also, let the ladies dress you. If you’ve got a girlfriend or even a mom or a sister, take some advice because they know what looks good on you, and they want you to look good.”

The Well-Dressed Man, located at 128 W. Cherokee St., opened Nov. 21. Hours are Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
