Lawrence County feasts on Magee

MONTICELLO – Lawrence County swept a varsity basketball double-header from Magee Tuesday night at LCHS. The LCHS girls edged Magee by a 40-38 margin, and the Cougar boys won by a 59-47 score.

Vicki Rutland’s girls won despite a tough shooting night. The Lady Cougars shot just 24 percent (13-of-55) from the floor, and were 13-of-37 (35 percent) from the free throw line. Lawrence County made just 7-of-18 free throws in the fourth quarter, keeping the game closer than it should have been.

Camryn Davis had a good game for Lawrence County. The sophomore forward had 15 points, 15 rebounds, five steals, and three blocked shots. Haven Johnson added seven points, and Jada McDuffey had seven steals.

The Lawrence County girls improved to 7-4 with the win. The Magee Lady Trojans fell to 4-3 with the loss. Magee was led by Natalie Counts and Jordan McCoy, who had 13 points each. The Lady Trojans were in foul trouble from the outset. Three Magee players fouled out.

In the boys’ game, Magee led 13-12 after one quarter, but LCHS grabbed the lead for good early in the second. The Cougars stretched their lead to 13 points midway through the third quarter, only to see the Trojans pull to within five. After that, Lawrence County pulled away for good.

Keyshawn Feazell, the Cougars’ 6-foot-8 junior center, led the way with 15 points, nine rebounds and two steals. Vernell Garner added 13 points and six rebounds. Gabriel Lewis added eight points for Pat Bridges’ Cougars, who improved to 7-4 with the win.

Bryson Mills led Magee with 11 points. Cliff Hubbard added 10.
