Brookhaven’s fall lunch spot will be open for business Thursday, with local musicians filling the air with music and artists filling the park with art.

“Music and Art at Trinity Park” will continue this month after a five-month hiatus and will feature a different musician and Brookhaven Regional Arts Guild artist every Thursday in October. The performances will begin at noon.

The Thursday afternoon events are a continuation of the inaugural artist showcase in April.

Local musician Shaw Furlow formed the idea of “Music and Art at Trinity Park” after working with local musicians and community members.

“The bottom line is, for the last four or five years, we’ve been trying to build a music and art scene in this town,” Furlow said. “Through help from different musicians and locals, we’ve developed a pretty good music scene.”

“We have worked our butts off to build this music scene,” he said. “Four, five years ago that would have never happened. Other towns have events like this, and we’re just trying to build a music scene to get people interested. We’ve got a great theater group in town, artists and musicians. We just want to give them a place to play.”

The event will take place at Trinity Park, a rarely-used venue, which is connected to the Church of the Redeemer on 224 West Monticello St.

The lineup includes:

• Oct. 6 – Hewitt Family Band

• Oct. 13 – Betsy Berryhill

• Oct. 20 – Andi Cotton

• Oct. 27 – Jordan Nettles

Furlow said April was considered the event’s test run, and because of its popularity, local musicians were willing to participate in the fall event.

“Three of the four performances will be by women,” he said. “It’s about time we have some female artists stepping into the spotlight.”

The musicians scheduled to perform are close friends of Furlow’s that he believes do a wonderful job of entertaining. Several of them participated in Furlow’s “Music from the Shady Side” series last year.

In addition to the musical performance each week, BRAG artists will be in the park showcasing their talent as well.

“We have asked for BRAG artists to come, but you don’t have to be a BRAG member to come set up,” Furlow said. “We encourage any artists to come and bring their art to sell or display. Come paint while they are singing. We would love to have all types of artists.”

The event is a way for community members to take a break from work, sit around and listen to music and eat their lunch, Furlow said.

During the Oct. 13 show, Furlow said Betty’s Eat Shop will be serving lunch at the park.

“We hope serving food during the performance will be successful,” he said. “We are supposed to have beautiful weather this Thursday, so we encourage people to bring a lawn chair and their lunch, and sit out and watch artists and listen to the music.”
