The Bassfield Yellowjackets’ high-scoring offense and stout defense showed why they are the favorites to repeat as district champs in a blowout win over Loyd Star Friday. 
Bassfield (8-2, 4-0 district)  dominated the Hornets (3-7, 1-3 district), winning 61-7.
On their opening drive, the Jackets’ Jafarhis Mckines sprung free for a 35-yard touchdown. It was the first of many for Bassfield.

With 3:21 left in the first, the Jackets’ Channing Daley managed to connect with Durdon Knight for a 26-yard touchdown.

On the ensuing kick, the Hornets muffed the ball and the Jackets recovered. With just a little over three minutes left in the first, Daley connected with Gerobe Peters for a 15-yard touchdown. The Jackets led 21-0 heading into the second quarter.

Facing their sixth fourth down of the night, the Hornets — for the third time — punted the ball away. With 2:48 left in the second quarter, the Jackets’ Mason Sims ran for a four-yard touchdown.

Facing their seventh fourth down of the night, the Hornets decided to go for it. The Jackets’ defense was able to get the stop and with just a little over a minute left in the second, Thompson broke free for a 36-yard touchdown run, giving the Jackets a commanding 40-0 lead at the half.

The Jackets opened the third quarter the way they ended the second, as Thompson sprinted for a 53-yard touchdown. 

Despite being able to mix up their offense and move the ball down the field, the Hornets found themselves punting the ball away again. As time was expiring in the third quarter, the Jackets’ Hunter Hathorn found the end zone on a one-yard run and the Jackets led 54-0 going into the fourth.

The last quarter went back and forth as neither team scored until a little over four minutes remained.

Thompson was able to find the end zone for the Jackets on a 20-yard run.

With just three minutes left, the Hornets were determined not to be shut out, as Corey Baker broke free from tackles and dashed for a 60-yard touchdown.

“Bassfield is a fine team. The players play hard and execute their plays to perfection,” Hornets head coach Adam Cook said.

Bassfield will head to Prentiss Friday for their final game of the regular season Friday. Loyd Star will host West Lincoln for their final game of the regular season. Kickoff for both games start at 7 p.m.
