The West Lincoln Bears and Lady Bears met up with Bassfield Tuesday night and Bassfield came out on top in both matchups. The Yellow Jackets defeated West Lincoln by a score of 62-51 and the Lady Bears fell 40-29.

West Lincoln falls to 6-8 on the season and the Lady Bears dropped to 4-10.

Bassfield 62, West Lincoln 51

The Bears came out flat to start the game, trailing Bassfield 18-8 at the end of the first quarter. They trailed Bassfield 40-25 at halftime and couldn’t overcome the deficit the rest of the game.

“We were flat in the first half and played with little desire,” West Lincoln head coach Lane Young said. “We did the same thing in the third quarter, but we played better after that. It ended up being too little too late.”

Junior forward Adam Martinez led the Bears in scoring with 21 points on 9-19 shooting from the field with four rebounds as well. Junior forward Chase Owen had a big game for the West Lincoln as well with 10 points and led the team, with 12 rebounds. Junior forward Donterrius Taylor chipped in with 11 points and three rebounds.

Young wants to see more leadership and energy from the leaders of his team if his team wants to compete in district play.

“Our junior leaders have not performed up to their capabilities up until now and we need them to do that to have success,” Young said. “Until that happens, our play will be up and down like it has been all year.”

Lady Jackets 40, Lady Bears 29

The Lady Bears of West Lincoln struggled shooting the ball in the first half, trailing Bassfield 25-9 at halftime. West Lincoln would make a run late in the fourth quarter, outscoring Bassfield 14-6, but it wasn’t enough as the lady Jackets came out on top 40-29.

“We shot the ball poorly until the fourth quarter and made a run at them,” Young said. “Bassfield shot the ball well and made some key baskets that hurt us. We just have to improve shooting and protecting the basketball.”

West Lincoln turned the ball over 23 times, which ultimately led to the loss. Sophomore forward Skylar Hall led the Lady Bears in scoring with 12 points on 4-13 shooting. Sophomore guard Megan Gerald was next in scoring for the Lady Bears with eight points on 4-12 shooting from the field. Senior forward Demesha Deer helped contribute on the boards by the leading the Lady Bears with seven rebounds on the night. Sophomore guard Haley Moak led the Lady Bears with four assists on the night and also scored three points.

Next up for West Lincoln is an in-district matchup with Loyd Star Friday night at West Lincoln High School.
