The Brookhaven Panthers and Lady Panthers put on an offensive show Tuesday night against Wingfield as the two teams combined to score 159 points against the Falcons.

The Panthers overcame a sloppy first quarter and dominated Wingfield 77-44 and the Lady Panthers did the same as well with the 82-64 win over the Lady Falcons. The win moves the Panthers to 17-5 overall and the win moves the Lady Panthers to 11-12 overall and 6-0 in district play.

Brookhaven 77, Wingfield 44

The Panthers came out slow to start the game off by missing shots and turning the ball over. Wingfield capitalized on those opportunities and took a 6-0 lead out of the gate. Brookhaven head coach Jimmie Butler called a timeout to regroup his players and the intensity picked up from there.

The Panthers took a 16-13 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Brookhaven would out-score Wingfield 51-14 in the second and third quarter all together to take the Falcons completely out of their rhythm and put the game out of reach.

“We have been focusing more on defense during practice. We developed a defensive game plan the players believed in,” Butler said. “We asked them to have fun, trust each other, and give their best effort.”

The Panthers certainly gave their best effort at home Tuesday night, shooting an efficient 50 percent from the field and played their most complete game of the season. Brookhaven has now won three games in a row and are 4-2 in district play heading into their final regular season game Friday night at home versus Vicksburg.

Senior guard Damarius Brooks had his fingerprints all over the game Tuesday night, scoring 26 points on an impressive 10-for-16 shooting from the field. Brooks played a complete game by racking up five assists, four steals and three rebounds.

Another standout for the Panthers for the Panthers was sophomore forward Lafollette Bogan. Bogan reeled in a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds on the night.

“(Damarius) Brooks displayed great leadership tonight and (Lafollette) Bogan is not your normal 10th grader,” Butler said. “Lafollette’s double-double is a testament of his hard work.”

Sophomore John Hilbert and freshman KaDarius Wells played big roles in the win as well. Hilbert recorded six points and six rebounds in 23 minutes of action and Wells had eight points, five rebounds and three blocks in 22 minutes of action.

“Hilbert and Wells are gaining confidence and are expected to contribute more during the district tournament,” Butler said.

Lady Panthers 82, Lady Falcons 64

Coming off a tough loss to Jim Hill last week, the Brookhaven Lady Panthers regrouped and bounced back in a big way by dominating Wingfield 82-64.

The win keeps the Lady Panthers perfect in district play for the season at 6-0.

The first quarter for the Lady Panthers started out just like the boys game did, with sloppy play and turnovers giving Wingfield life early on. The Lady Falcons took advantage of their opportunities and tied the game at 14 at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Panthers came out with a different mentality in the second quarter and scored at will the rest of the way. In the final three quarters, Brookhaven scored 68 points in the final three quarters to get the victory over Wingfield.

The Lady Panthers head into their final game of the regular season against Vicksburg winning seven of their last eight games; momentum that can be very useful heading into the district playoffs next week at Provine.
