Brookhaven Academy stops Amite rebellion

The Brookhaven Academy Cougars and Lady Cougars traveled to Liberty Thursday afternoon for their second matchup of the season with the Amite School Center Rebels in non-district play.

Like the previous outings, the BA squads wasted no time making a statement and putting the Rebels away early. The Cougars rolled to a 50-24 victory while the Lady Cougars flexed their muscles on their way to a decisive 49-17 win.

In varsity boys’ action, the Cougars posted a 20-0 lead over the reeling Rebels after one quarter of play that was more reminiscent of a football score than a contest on the hardwood. With the big lead in hand, coach Josh Watts was able to go to his bench early and rest some starters, allowing a few bumps and bruises to heal.

Senior Tate Felder had one of his best nights of the year, racking up 22 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists. Cade Brown had seven points, while Dawson Flowers and Tanner Thurman chipped in six points each. Dawson Zumbro added five points to round out the BA scoring leaders.

Brady Milton led the Rebels with seven points.

The Lady Cougars came out fast and furious to grab a 21-point advantage at the midway break and didn’t let up from there on their way to the eventual 32-point win.

Sharp-shooting junior Jana Case finished the afternoon with 21 points, 16 of those coming in the first quarter of play. Kailyn Jordan added 10 points to the BA total. Anne Brantley Warren tossed in seven points in support. Case and Warren each had five steals on the defensive side of the ball.

Lauren Booty led ASC with nine points.

In junior high action, the BA boys routed the Rebels by a score of 42-14, and the Lady Cougars took the 35-29 win.

BA will be back in action Tuesday, as the Sylva Bay Saints visit John R. Gray Gymnasium for four games. Junior high girls start time is set for 4 p.m.

All Cougar fans and the community are invited to attend and take part in some special recognitions and activities during halftime of the varsity girl’s game Tuesday evening.
