Graveside services for Alice Laverne Strait Walker, of Raymond, are today, March 16, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Raymond Cemetery. Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Raymond is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation was held Thursday, March 15, 2018, from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Walker, 81, died Sunday, March 11, 2018, surrounded by her family.

She was born July 3, 1936, in Lincoln County, to Lucy and Kelly Strait. She attended school in Loyd Star and graduated from Brookhaven High School. She received her degree in nutrition from Mississippi Southern College. She married the love of her life, Charles Allen Walker Aug. 23, 1959. She worked as a registered dietician at the VA Hospital and Baptist Hospital before beginning her second career as an educator at Hinds Community College in 1972.

She taught nutrition and served as head of the home economics department. While at Hinds, she and her husband were instrumental in beginning Hinds Connection. She also served as the Special Events Coordinator. She retired from Hinds in 1996.

Alice enjoyed cooking and entertaining her friends and family. She was an avid gardener and loved decorating her home for the seasons.

Preceded her in death were her husband, Charles; parents, Lucy and Kelly Strait; and her brother, Mickey Strait.

She is survived by her five children, Drew (Dianne) Walker, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Elisa (George) Zamka, of Manassas, Virginia, Mark (Sandra) Walker, of Madison, Jason (Lisa) Walker, of Ridgeland, and Joel (Wendy) Walker, of Shady Valley, Tennessee; sister, Marlene (Ted) Vinson, of Citronelle, Alabama; brother, Gene (Alma) Strait, of Loyd Star; and 10 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Alice and Charles Walker Scholarship through the Hinds Community College Foundation.
