Police are continuing the search for the person who fired the fatal shot that killed a Brookhaven teenager.

Tony McGee, 19, was found shot in his car shortly after 4 a.m. March 20 near East Monticello and Grenn streets, said Chief Kenneth Collins.

A passerby called police to report a car had struck a utility pole near Star Drive In. When police arrived, they discovered McGee behind the wheel.

Lincoln County Coroner Clay McMorris said an autopsy at the state medical examiner’s office was done, but reports have not been completed that will determine if his death came from the shooting or the crash.

However, Collins is investigating the incident as a homicide. He said last week the shooting occurred in another location.

Collins issued a written statement Monday.

“Tony McGee Jr., age 19, lost his life to gun violence,” Collins said. “McGee leaves behind a wonderful son, and grieving family members, and a mother who works a full-time job while taking classes at Co-Lin Community College trying to make a better life for herself and her family. She is one of the most beautiful people that you will meet and has a heart of gold.

“She is not seeking revenge. She is seeking justice,” he continued. “Now is not the time for blame or social media. We must come together to get this crime — along with others — solved as soon as possible so we all can do better, and feel safer.

“If you have any proof or know who had committed this crime, please come give us a statement,” Collins concluded. “Law enforcement risks everything each day trying to keep our community safe, but we need the community’s help with doing so. Where fear is a concern, God is the only one whom we should fear.”
