The Brookhaven High School College and Career Readiness class will be working to give back to the community Friday.

“We wanted to do a community service project to help the homeless and the needy,” BHS student Miracle Mobley said.

A food drive will be at BHS from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. CCR teacher Stephen Keys said students, parents and faculty were informed of the food drive, and his students are invested in seeing it do well.

“It’s surprising, they were anxious and eager to give back,” Keys said. “To me, that lets me know we have some good kids at Brookhaven High School.”

Keys said the donations would be split between Brookhaven Outreach Ministries and the Darlene Slater Rehabilitation Center for Women, more commonly known as the Doll’s House.

Brookhaven Outreach Ministries serves not only Lincoln County, but also Lawrence and Franklin counties. According to BOM Director Jerry Durr, the ministry served over 5,600 families in 2018, and have already served over 4,500 families this year. Durr said food drives like this one are a great help to their food bank.

“We sure do appreciate them thinking about us and the community of Lincoln County,” he said. “Whatever they do will truly make a difference in our community.”

Canned foods are welcome, but residents can donate any variety of unopened non-perishable food. Durr said dry products like rice and beans are particularly useful.
