2022 Daily Leader All-Area Softball Team

Jordyn Bridges, Lawrence County

A senior, Bridges posted a .357 batting average at the plate for a 9-14 Lawrence County team in 2022. A first baseman, she had a .557 slugging percentage and drove in 17 runs for the Cougars. A basketball standout for LC on the hardwood, Bridges also hit two home runs this season for coach Alexandria Harris as the team dropped a close 3-game series to Northeast Jones in the opening round of the 4A state playoffs.

Aubrey Britt, Loyd Star

A senior, Britt had a .324 average at the plate for a 22-7 Loyd Star team. The 2021 All-Area softball defensive MVP, she scored team high 38 runs while playing in the outfield for coach Scott Leggett. A four time-state champion in cross-country, Britt drove in 18 runs and hit four doubles in 2022. An All-Area selection in basketball, she was hit by a pitch a whopping 12 times this softball season. A Blue Mountain College signee for cross-country and basketball, the speedy Britt led the team with 19 stolen bases in 19 attempts.

Abby Burnette, Loyd Star

A sophomore, Burnette posted a .372 batting averaged for a 22-7 Loyd Star team. A repeat Daily Leader All-Area selection, she hit a team high 13 doubles in 2022. Burnette also hit four triples and drove in 32 RBIs for coach Scott Leggett. An All-Area selection in soccer too, Burnette scored 36 runs and also was second on the team in pitching appearances when not playing in the infield.

Layla Burt, Loyd Star

A seventh grader, Burt threw 110 innings in the circle for a 22-7 Loyd Star team. Took over as the top pitcher on for the Hornets while in junior high and posted a 1.77 earned runs average. Struck out 117 and issued just 19 walks while facing 447 batters. At the plate, she batted .355 for coach Scott Leggett and his staff. Drove in 29 RBIs and had four doubles and one triple for the Region 7-2A champs.

Kat Case, Lawrence County

A senior, Case batted .278 at the dish for a 9-14 Lawrence County team. A strong defensive presence in the outfield, she drove in 20 RBIs for coach Alexandria Harris in 2022. Case also posted a .428 slugging percentage and hit two home runs for the Cougars. She’s signed to play softball next season at Copiah-Lincoln CC.

Morgan Chemin, Enterprise

An eighth grader, Chemin had a .405 batting average at the plate for a 6-14 Enterprise team. An All-Area selection last season as a catcher, the athletic Chemin played second and shortstop this season for coach Alicia Smith. Led her team in RBIs and extra base hits while finishing as an All-Region 7-1A selection on an Enterprise team that made the MHSAA 1A playoffs.

Kensy Covington, Brookhaven Academy

A freshman, Covington put together a .381 batting average for a 32-6-1 Brookhaven Academy team. She had four doubles, one triple and four homeruns while playing in the infield. Covington drove in 42 RBIs for coach Becky Flowers on a MAIS 5A state championship squad. She was also second on the team in pitching appearances with 46.2 innings thrown and a 2.25 earned runs average in the circle.

Bailee Goodson, Brookhaven Academy

A senior, Goodson produced a .431 batting average for a 32-6-1 Brookhaven Academy team. Smacked 13 doubles, one triple and seven homeruns for coach Becky Flowers. A versatile player that can fill in multiple positions in the infield, she has signed to play softball next year at Co-Lin. A MAIS All-Star in softball and basketball and a repeat All-Area selection, she led BA with 58 RBIs in a MAIS 5A state championship winning season.

Carson Hughey, Loyd Star

A junior, Hughey produced a team high 40 hits for a 22-7 Loyd Star team. Moved from primarily pitching to center field this season and shined their defensively. Batted .421 at the plate as a leadoff hitter for coach Scott Leggett. Drove in 26 runs while hitting seven doubles and two triples as the dish. Previously a two-time Daily Leader All-Area softball selection, she’s verbally committed to next play at Co-Lin.

Taylor Jackson, Bogue Chitto

A sophomore, Jackson put up a .298 batting average for a 7-14 Bogue Chitto team. An All-Region 7-2A selection, she stole 14 bases and drove in 13 runs for coach Candace McDowell and the Bobcats. Had a .849 fielding percentage at third base. Her older sister Baileigh Jackson, was an All-Area catcher for Bogue Chitto before playing softball at Co-Lin.

Alyssa Leggett, Loyd Star

A junior, Leggett hit for a team high .462 batting average for a 22-7 Loyd Star team in 2022. A talented catcher, she drove in a team best 40 runs this season for the Region 7-2A champs. Leggett blasted 11 doubles and two homeruns while playing for a Loyd Star coaching staff that includes her parents, Scott and Denise Leggett. A repeat All-Area selection in softball, she’s also earned the same honor in basketball during her high school career.

Deanna Lofton, West Lincoln

A junior, Lofton posted a .429 batting average at the plate for a 16-12 West Lincoln team. A strong defensive infielder, she led West Lincoln with 25 RBIs in 2022. Lofton hit five doubles and two triples for coach Anita Thornton. Also splits her time playing soccer and basketball for West Lincoln.

Maggie Reynaud, Brookhaven High

A junior, Reynaud delivered a .329 batting average for a 14-14 Brookhaven High team. The athletic Reynaud drove in 28 RBIs and struck out just nine times for a BHS team that made the MHSAA 5A playoffs. She also serves as a cornerstone of the Ole Brook pitching staff. Struck out 55 batters for coach Mandy Vinson and was named team MVP in 2022.

Mallory Sanders, Wesson

A sophomore, Sanders was a standout at the plate and in the circle for an 18-6 Wesson team. She batted .411 in the middle of the Cobra lineup and drove in 14 runs while hitting nine doubles and two home runs. Sanders really shined as a pitcher, posting a 1.66 earned runs average and a 14-3 record. Her play was a big part of Wesson and coach Michelle Nunnery winning Region 7-3A and making the third round of the MHSAA 3A playoffs.

Anne Claire Sistrunk, Lawrence County

A senior, Sistrunk put up a team best .426 batting average this season for a 9-14 Lawrence County team. A versatile utility player, she drove in 26 runs for coach Alexandria Harris. Sistrunk finished with a .667 slugging percentage and hit three home runs in 2022. She’s signed a scholarship to play softball next season at Southwest Mississippi CC.

Kyla Smith, Wesson (18-6 overall)

A senior, the surehanded Smith led her team at the plate with a .464 batting average in 2022. A second baseman, she drove in 16 runs for a 18-6 Wesson team. Smith has been an important piece of the roster for Wesson coach Michelle Nunnery since she was in junior high and in her final season, she hit four doubles and played strong defense at second base for a region winning team of Cobras.

Camryn Summerall, West Lincoln

A senior, Summerall had a team best .477 batting average at the plate for a 16-12 West Lincoln team. A versatile position player that can catch or play in the infield and outfield, she drove in 23 runs while hitting nine doubles, two triples and one homerun for coach Anita Thornton. Twice named All-Area in softball, she was also a DL All-Area selection in soccer this season and has signed a soccer scholarship to play next year at Itawamba CC.

Angel “Cookie” Wilkinson, Brookhaven High

A junior, Wilkinson hit .319 last season for a 14-14 Brookhaven High that made the MHSAA 5A state playoffs in 2022. Wilkinson was named the Most Valuable Infielder on her team as she drove in 15 RBIs this season. A gifted two-sport athlete, Wilkinson was named All-Area MVP in girls’ basketball this season as well.

Juliana Wilson, Wesson

A sophomore, Wilson put together a .348 batting average for an 18-6 Wesson team this season. Showed she can hit for power after putting up the second-best slugging percentage on the team with a .543 average. Hit eight doubles and one home run for coach Michelle Nunnery. A catcher, she was honorable mention All-Area last season and is the sister of former Wesson catcher Catherine Wilson, an All-Area selection herself who signed with Co-Lin after playing for the Cobras.

Baylee Zumbro, Loyd Star

A senior, Zumbro hit for a .370 batting average at the plate for a 22-7 Loyd Star team. A multi-year starter in the infield, she had her best season at the plate this year for coach Scott Leggett. Drove in 33 RBIs, hit 10 doubles and one home run in 2022 and is a repeat All-Area selection. The keen-eyed Zumbro made 93 plate appearances this season and struck out zero times while drawing a team best 13 walks at the plate.
